H1N1 Vaccine Delivery

September 25, 2009 - A report in the Pittsburgh Post Gazette notes that the earliest deliveries to the states of the H1N1 vaccine should occur by 10/6/09. The CDC is taking the orders of the states the week of 9/28 and should be shipping the vaccine the following week. Most of the initial doses will be of the intranasal vaccine, Flumist, which grew faster in the labs. This vaccine is only for use in those 2-49 years old and has certain health restrictions.

The injectable vaccines should be available several weeks later, with 40 million doses altogether available by that time. The vaccines will require 1 dose for those 9 and over. Children of 6 months through 8 years will require 2 doses, 21 days apart.

The vaccines will be distributed to the states under a formula based upon population. The states will decide upon the methods of distribution.
